For families of a child born with a cardiac condition, the burdens of receiving care often times go beyond treatment for the condition itself. Travel expenses such as airfare and lodging can accumulate rapidly as the family seeks the best medical care available for their child. Extended stays are often required as the necessary medical treatment can span weeks or even months, in some cases.
In an effort to alleviate some of these costs for the patient’s families, Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) teamed with the Next Generation Developer’s Task Force to open the Yawkey Family Inn in Brookline, MA. Families of patients at Boston Children’s Hospital can stay at this state of the art facility for little to no cost as their loved one undergoes treatment. The close proximity of the Yawkey Family Inn to the Hospital allows the patient’s family to provide their child with the love and support that is essential in recovery from cardiac treatment.
We at Live 4 Evan were motivated by this cause and have established a program with BCH in which we will serve dinner to the patients and their families at the Inn several times a year. The first Live4Evan sponsored dinner took place in December of 2013 and we were awe-struck by the level of gratitude and appreciation that the families expressed for both the dinner and the Inn itself.
To join our cause in easing the burdens faced by the families of cardiac patients, email volunteer@live4evan.org to volunteer at the next Live4Evan sponsored event at the Yawkey Family Inn.
